The fourth stop on the 2024 Supercars Championship took the field all the way over to the West Coast for the 2024 Bosch Power Tools Perth SuperSprint. Perth’s CARCO.COM.AU Raceway would host Race 9 and 10 of the 2024 Championship with Nick Percat piloting the Bendix Racing Camaro.
The weekend’s action would kick off with a practice session on Friday afternoon. After 20 laps of CARCO.com.au Raceway, Nick would earn himself the second fastest lap amongst the grid in the session with a best time of 0:55.268s. Nick had the following to say after Friday’s practice.
Nick Percat: “Not a bad first day here at Perth - cars rolled out really strong, finished second in Practice 1, which puts us in a good spot. We probably need a little bit more out of the qualifying car; in saying that, the race car felt quite good. It has been a good job by the team to roll out two fast cars. Obviously unlucky with what happened to Cam at the end, but he was fast all session as well. I’m excited for the rest of the weekend; we’ve got one more practice session in the morning before quali tomorrow.”
Saturday’s Supercars festivities would start with qualifying for Race 9 which saw Nick earn a P13 start on the grid for Race 9 after a best lap of 0:54.810s. The green lights would go off on Race 9 later in the afternoon with Nick hauling the Bendix Racing Camaro through the pack, gaining six spots to a P7 finish. Nick had the following to say to round out Saturday’s efforts.
Nick Percat: “It was a great race! The only annoying part is probably not executing qualifying enough, I had another good start and moved up a couple of positions in the first lap. I then settled in and tried to protect the right-side tyres as I hoped we would only put two tyres on the left side. I came out in clear air and from then just managed the car home. The Bendix Camaro seemed to have good pace which is great for the team. Everyone did a great job repairing Cam’s car last night; having both cars at the front was awesome and we’re also in 4th position for the drivers’ championship now which is great. Hopefully have another solid day tomorrow and are leaving here happy. To me anytime being 4th in this championship is a good achievement."
Qualifying for Race 10 kicked away early Sunday afternoon with Nick claiming a P18 start on the grid for Race 10 after a 0.54.928s best lap in the session. Race 10 would be a dramatic outing for the team with Nick Percat attracting a 15-second penalty in the first after sending the #9 Camaro into a spin at Turn 6. Nick would fight hard to catch back up to the back following the penalty, ultimately crossing the chequered flag in P21. Nick had the following to say to wrap up his weekend in Perth.
Nick Percat: “It was one of those weekends! The car had good speed in the first part of qualifying but didn’t go on with it in Q2. It was frustrating to be buried in the pack for today’s race as well as receiving a 15-second penalty. The car was fast in the race, and we took our penalty and caught the train back up which meant we took out 15 seconds on our competitors in pure speed. It was the one that got away and we will leave Perth happy. It was good to see Cam at the front all weekend and we have a test day coming up before Darwin. I’m looking forward to another day to work through a few things and then go to Darwin, which is one of my favourite events of the year. I’ve had a few podiums at that track so I can’t wait to get there and get the Bendix car back up the front.”
With the 2024 Perth Superprint in the history books, we see Nick Percat remain at 6th on the leaderboard with 648 points. In the team standings, Matt Stone Racing move up to 6th place on the leaderboard with a total of 1141 points.
The 2024 Supercars Championship continues next month when the series heads to Darwin, Northern Territory for the 2024 betr Darwin Triple Crown, running from June 14th - 16th.
