The eleventh round of the 2024 Supercars Championship saw Bendix Racing play the home field, heading to Queensland for the 2024 Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500. The streets of Surfers Paradise would host Race 21 and Race 22 of the 2024 championship with Nick Percat behind the wheel of the Bendix Racing Camaro.
The on-track activity kicked off on Friday with the first practice session of the weekend. Nick Percat would drive the 18th fastest lap in the session with a best time of 1m12.272s. Practice 2 would take place later in the afternoon and see Nick go 16th fastest among the pack with a 1m11.283s best lap.
Saturday’s Supercars action would commence with Race 21 Qualifying which would see Nick find himself caught in a pile-up during the session, ultimately claiming a P19 start on the grid for that afternoon’s race after clocking a 1m11.192s best lap. After a stint in the pits to repair significant damage on the Bendix Racing Camaro caused by the pile-up in Qualifying, Race 21 would see a huge effort from Nick, climbing seven spots up from his starting place to a P12 race finish.
Sunday would kick away with Race 22 Qualifying with Nick claiming a P15 start on the grid for the Gold Coast finale thanks to a best time of 1m10.544s in the session. The green lights would go out on Race 22 later in the afternoon and begin with even more misfortune for Bendix Racing. Nick Percat would find himself caught in another pile-up with a dozen other cars in the opening stages of the race with the Bendix Racing Camaro again seeing significant damage.
After an excursion to the pits for repairs, Nick would head back out and ultimately finish the weekend with a P22 race result, the fastest lap of the race, and a new Gold Coast lap record. Nick had the following to say to cap off his Sunday efforts.
Nick Percat: “I had a good start and made up a few positions which was good. Got down to Turn 11 and it’s really the story of our weekend — there were some crashed cars already there and nowhere to go — frustrating. Obviously damaged the front splitter, but the boys did a good job to get the Car #4’s on there and from there it added salt to the wound because the car was really fast. We came away with the fastest lap of the race and a lap record — I wouldn’t say I was aiming for that, I was just driving around. A bit frustrating that probably a top five result has gone wanting. That’s motorsport, we’ll go to Adelaide for the last one and try and have a good one there.”
With Round 11 of the 2024 championship in the books, we see Nick Percat move to 8th on the leaderboard with 1656 points. In the team standings, Matt Stone Racing moves to 7th place on the leaderboard with a total of 3133 points.
The 2024 Supercars Championship continues next month when the series heads to South Australia for the 2024 VAILO Adelaide 500, running from November 14th – 17th.
